Corporal Ian Darcy

Corporal Ian Darcy Joined 4624 Squadron in 2007 and quickly established a reputation for hard work and dedication, always giving of his best, however mundane the task. He was also one of life’s true characters and was renowned for his wry witty humour and laconic, laid-back approach, though this concealed a passion for high standards and an ability to inspire this in others through personal example.

A fellow Corporal once described Ian’s leadership style as: having a unique ability to get people moving without them even realising he was giving direction. He never raised his voice, anyone can shout orders, but getting people to want to follow you requires real leadership—and Ian had that in abundance.

He frequently volunteered for military skills competitions, proudly representing the Squadron both in the UK and overseas. These events brought out the very best in him. His passion and dedication were unmistakable, and his enthusiasm was infectious.

Approachable and friendly, he always made time for new recruits, offering a warm welcome to the RAF Reserves and patiently answering their questions. As an NCO, he was the epitome of professionalism: calm, competent, and deeply respected—a steady and reassuring presence in any setting, yet always with a mischievous glint in his eye.

Through his humour, he had a great ability to lift spirits, brighten situations and bring joy through his quick wit, kindness, and genuine warmth. He always had a joke or clever comment – sometimes perfectly timed, and occasionally, delightfully ill-timed – but he would always leave everyone smiling. His light-hearted nature and good humour brought people together and left a lasting impression

Ian died suddenly on 13 August 2016, near his home while out for his regular run. His loss left a void on the Sqn and he is still remembered today with great fondness by those who knew him for his laughter, his leadership and his zest for the Reservist life.
