Michael Morgan – No 1 Maritime Headquarters Unit

Flight Lieutenant Mike Morgan first joined No 1 Maritime headquarters Unit at RAF Northolt as an Aircraftsman in November 1998. He embarked on his training as a Flight Operations Assistant before being Commissioned as an Acting Pilot Officer in 1999, continuing with what then became 600 (City of London) Squadron.

He completed his training as Flight Operations Officer at RAF Shawbury and later RAF Cranwell when he undertook additional training as an Electronic Warfare Officer. Flight Lieutenant Morgan’s service with the squadron took him as far afield as Oman, Belgium, Holland, and Denmark. His deployment for Annual Continuous Training involved him in Electronic Warfare tasking and tactical planning, with Nimrod Operations and as a ‘Searider’ liaising as a Tasker for Maritime Patrol aircraft on exercise on board ship with the Royal Netherlands Navy. Closer to home, he took an active part in the Squadron’s working and social life acting as Flight Ops Training Officer, Unit Security Officer and working with the Entertainment Committee. He was mobilised in 2004 where he served as a Flight Operations Officer with 20(R) Squadron, RAF Wittering, working, and flying with the Harrier display team.

Family and professional commitments meant that Flight Lieutenant Morgan was not able to continue his Service with the squadron, but in his final year he was honoured to act as Parade Commander for the Guard of Honour for the Lord Mayor’s show in 2008.

In civilian life Mike worked as a lawyer. He married Siobhan, who he met through the service with the squadron, in July 2009. Children Freddy, Thomas, and Connie soon followed.

Mike is remembered as a resolute Officer with a mischievous spirit, but ultimately as a great friend and dedicated husband and father.
