Dianne Smith – 602 (City of Glasgow) Squadron

Following service with the Royal Air Force, Dianne joined 602 (City of Glasgow) Sqn in 2015

Based with the Sqn’s Moray Flight at Royal Air Force Lossiemouth, Dianne rapidly re-established herself as an Operations specialist. She became the RAF’s first Typhoon Quick Reaction Alert Manager.

Dianne played a key role in rebuilding the UK’s Maritime Patrol Aircraft capability to support NATO operations. On one exercise involving a Portuguese F16 detachment, she coordinated the operational and logistical support between the Royal Air Force and the Portuguese Air Force.

Following a short career break to support her family overseas, Dianne returned to Service and was mobilised to undertake VIP Air Mobility Operations including organising the Prime Minister’s visit to the United States.

Selected from 185 applicants to serve on the Chief of the Air Staff’s Shadow Board, she influenced Service policy affecting over 30,000 personnel. She also represented the military on the Minister for Veterans and People’s Defence Voices Panel and later served as UK Space Command Reserves Coordinator, helping shape the future employment of reserve personnel across the defence spectrum.

Beyond her normal duties, Dianne was a tireless advocate for reservists and for 602 Sqn personnel.

Sadly, whilst still serving, Dianne died in March this year from natural causes. She will be remembered for her professionalism, warmth and her unfailing kindliness and support for others.
